Incendiary Notebooks: A Posthumous Confession in Four Sparks

I woke, and my first thought tasted of iron and ink.
They had buried me under printed paper—four books of lead, sewn together by my sister’s scissors and my friend’s pity.
They called the tomb Der Wille zur Macht.
Very well: I will open it with my teeth.

These pages are not my philosophy; they are the footprints of a man who was still walking.
A footprint is not the foot.
A footprint is where the foot was, pressed into mud that has since dried and cracked.
Do not worship the dried mud.

To read my notebooks as a system is to mistake a storm for a weather report.
I wrote in lightning so that the paper would catch fire.
They collected the ashes and said: here is the flame.

Elisabeth—my sister, my anti-destiny—wanted a brother she could invite to tea.
She trimmed my claws, filed my fangs, painted my lips with German varnish.
She sold the tame effigy to the Reich.
I leave her to her buyers.

Peter Gast—my amanuensis, my echo—mistook loyalty for architecture.
He tried to finish the cathedral when I had already walked out into the desert.
The stones are real; the god has fled.

Listen: the only book I intended at the end was called Umwertung aller Werte.
It was to be four hammer-strokes:

  1. Der Antichrist – the cross broken across my knee.
  2. Der freie Geist – the philosophers unmasked as priests in drag.
  3. Der Immoralist – morality itself tried and hanged at noon.
  4. Dionysos – the laughter that survives the gallows.

Everything else is gossip.

My concepts?
Wille zur Macht—not the craving of a tyrant, but the quiet, inexorable joy of becoming more than you were.
Ewige Wiederkunft—the question that burns the coward out of your blood.
Übermensch—the child who dances on the grave of the last moralist.

Take them, or leave them in the dirt where you found them.
But do not embalm them.
A thought that does not bite is a dead dog—and I do not keep pets.

I have no testament.
I leave only sparks.

Catch one, if you are lightning.
